Hidalgo Park, Houston, Texas

A partnership between Uptown Houston and TxDOT transforms this highway detention lake, within remnant right-of-way, into an activated urban open space for the Uptown Houston community to use and enjoy. The park creates accessible connectivity to and along the waterfront. It lays-down grade to open views from Post Oak Boulevard, Hidalgo and Waterwall Park to the pond resulting in a sloping play lawn on the axis with the relocated geyser fountain. A plaza of expanded Boulevard paving surrounds the polished stainless-steel arches. The plaza invites people into the park and creates a gathering and leisure space while leading to the lake via an accessible walk and terraces stepping down the slope through the shade of preserved and proposed Cypress trees. Hidalgo Park is a safe space for play, hanging out, having a picnic on the lawn, walking the dog, and taking the kids to feed Koi and Ducks, day or night.
